The globe is under great pressure from climate change, overuse of resources, increasing volumes of waste, etc. All research shows that humanity needs to change course quickly if we are to have a future here on Earth. In 2015, the UN launched its 17 Sustainable Development Goals; a roadmap showing how we can change course. All countries worldwide have signed up to working to support the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
egecarpets does its bit to support many of the Sustainable Development Goals through targeted efforts to create sustainable products, good workplaces and decent conditions throughout the value chain. However, we have chosen to dedicate our main focus on 3 Sustainable Development Goals directly linked to our core business: carpets. This is how we can make the biggest difference.
egecarpets uses Cradle to Cradle product certification as a sustainability framework for its entire business. Cradle to Cradle is the vision of a world in which humankind does not adversely affect the environment. The idea is to manufacture products consisting only of healthy materials. The products must be designed to be incorporated into a biological or technical life cycle after use. The company must endeavour to become carbon neutral and use 100% renewable energy, and the processed wastewater must, in principle, be clean enough to drink. Finally, the company must be assessed for compliance with internationally recognised social responsibility standards. Cradle to Cradle is the epitome of responsible consumption and production. egecarpets is the largest holder of Cradle to Cradle-certified products world wide. All of our products for the contract market will be Cradle to Cradle-certified during 2019, making sustainability and responsible consumption an important part of our core service.
One of the world's major challenges is plastic waste. Plastic degrades very slowly and poses a major threat to the environment, and not least to marine life. At egecarpets, we use large quantities of plastic waste in our products and packaging. The yarn used in a great many of our products consists of regenerated fishing nets and other industrial nylon waste. The felt backing on our carpet tiles consists of 100% recycled plastic bottles. The carpet base between the pile and the backing of the carpets also consists mainly of recycled industrial waste. The same applies to the carpet tubes, which are 100% recycled plastic. Overall, a huge amount of plastic is recycled in our products every year rather than ending up as waste in the natural environment. This makes it part of our core service.
Green energy is not part of our core service. On the other hand, we work with it at such a high level that it makes a real difference. 100% of our electricity consumption is derived from renewable energy, which we purchase from offshore wind farms. We are also in the process of switching from natural gas to bio-gas, and we are exploring the possibilities of renewable energy in the group in general.
In the years to come, we will continue to focus on the Sustainable Development Goals within the ege Group, thereby doing what we can to achieve the UN’s roadmap to save the world. We hope that more companies will follow suit by taking an active stance on where they can make a difference, and then make a concerted effort to do so.
