In February 2016, ege achieved a long-pursued key milestone in its extensive CSR activities. On gaining the nine Cradle to Cradle certificates for a further 34 products, most of ege's product range is now Cradle to Cradle certified. Its 35 certified products in total make ege one of the carpet producers with most Cradle to Cradle Certificates, on a worldwide basis.
Facts about Cradle to Cradle
Cradle to Cradle is the vision of a world in which the consumption of resources not only has the smallest possible environmental footprint, but even leaves a positive footprint.
Imagine a carpet made exclusively from recycled materials. After use, the carpet is broken down into smaller components, which are used for new carpets. The energy for this production comes from offshore wind turbines, and the surplus heat from production is used to heat municipal buildings. This is the ultimate example of the Cradle to Cradle philosophy applied to carpets.
Requirements of Cradle to Cradle products
The aim is to manufacture products which exclusively comprise materials that can be part of a healthy life cycle, without being to the detriment of people and the environment. The product is designed to be part of a biological or technical life cycle, without generating any waste. The aim is also to achieve CO2 neutrality and 100% use of renewable energy, and the process wastewater must be so clean that it can, in principle, be used as drinking water. The company is also assessed for compliance with recognised social responsibility standards.
Annette Hastrup, CEO of Vugge til Vugge, which is the Danish representative of Cradle to Cradle, has great respect for ege's achievement: "This is a demanding process, in which we've been in contact with more than 50 of ege's suppliers and reviewed 115 materials. ege can be proud of achieving the most extensive Cradle to Cradle certification ever seen in Denmark, and also one of the largest in global terms."
An entire year of hard work
The nine new certifications are based on many hours of work in the carpet laboratory, Jan Ladefoged, ege's CSR manager, explains: "We've been working on these certifications for a whole year, as it's a very exacting task to review all of the products, right down to the smallest chemical details. Yet this is really worthwhile since it's something that customers ask for – which helps to give us a big lead on our competitors. Not many carpet producers can boast Cradle to Cradle-certified products."
A string of outstanding awards
At the end of 2015, the European Commission awarded ege a National Pioneer Certificate for being one of the first companies in Denmark to register with EMAS, 20 years ago. Shortly before, ege received the CSR Strategy Prize 2015 from KPMG and Mad & Bolig's honorary award for sustainable design.
